If It Looks Like a Duck . . .
On April 23rd, 2013, the television network Logo TV broadcast the documentary What? I Think I’m an Animal, featuring interviews with teenagers who believe their physical human bodies do not reflect their spiritual animal identifies. These people call themselves Therians or Otherkins, people who identify, in some intrinsic way, as an animal that exists or has existed on earth. Some believe that their soul is that of an animal while others believe the cause of their animal identity is psychological. In the film, teenager Shiro Ulv (that’s his animal name) states that “On all levels except physical, I am a wolf”, followed by a scene in which he is shown barking while looking over a body of water. I’m not really interested in talking about the implications (spiritual or psychological) of this phenomenon, just to point out the fact that these individuals have convinced themselves (and sometimes others) that they are something other than what they really are. Apparently the adage if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be duck doesn’t apply any longer. You may not know any therians, but some people practice a similar mentality that hits a bit closer to home. They convinced themselves of their Christianity without experiencing the reality of it.
