Divine Wisdom Is Balance

Rejoice, young man, during your childhood, and let your heart be pleasant during the days of young manhood. And follow the impulses of your heart and the desires of your eyes. Yet know that God will bring you to judgment for all these things. So, remove grief and anger from your heart and put away pain from your body, because childhood and the prime of life are fleeting.” (Ecclesiastes 11:9–10)

God is all-wise and generously shares His wisdom with those who seek Him and are willing to see His wisdom (Jam 1:5-6). Thus, all the wisdom that God shares comes from Himself. And reading Ecclesiastes 11, I conclude that this wisdom is balance. It is looking toward and planning for the future, but not letting the future paralyze. It is enjoying daylight but not so consumed by it that the darkness becomes depressingly unbearable. It is loving and enjoying the life God has given but not to such excess that we ignore the reality of His judgment in the end. My problem is that I am prone to the extremes. In my flesh, I am lazy about planning and terrified of the future. I live for daylight and the moment, but then find myself confused by the darkness and self-condemned by my sin. But I want to be different; I want God’s wisdom to fill me. I am determined to live in the balance of God’s wisdom for His glory and my joy.
